The mechanic who rebuilt a derailleur by torchlight and had us moving by seven. Not perfect — a permit check held us up for half a day and nobody had warned us it was likely — but it didn't take much away from the rest.

Two nights in a Nongriat homestay where the food was better than anything we ate in Shillong. Not perfect — the Guwahati leg took five hours in traffic and ate most of a day — but it didn't take much away from the rest.
