  • Half of it was excellent

Riding out of Ziro with a support van that turned up exactly where it said it would. Against that, a permit check held us up for half a day and nobody had warned us it was likely, and for what we paid I'd expect the whole trip to be at the level of its best day.

Appreciated, Kavya. We've taken the point about pacing and have cut one drive out of this itinerary entirely.

  • Our captain made it

The riverside camp, where the crew cooked over a fire and nobody touched their phone. The whole thing was organised without ever feeling packaged, and we were never once left wondering what happened next.

Thanks Varun. Noted on what could have been better; we've already moved that leg earlier in the day for future groups.

  • Nearly perfect

Swapping the raft for bicycles on day six, which broke up the trip perfectly. Not perfect — the hotel on the first night was a clear step below the rest of the trip — but it didn't take much away from the rest.

Thank you Abhishek — I've passed this on to the crew, who will be very pleased. Come back in the dry months and we'll show you the stretch we didn't have time for.

  • The best trip we've taken

Two nights in a Nongriat homestay where the food was better than anything we ate in Shillong. The whole thing was organised without ever feeling packaged, and we were never once left wondering what happened next.

  • Our captain made it

How little of it was scheduled — we were asked each morning what we felt like. The whole thing was organised without ever feeling packaged, and we were never once left wondering what happened next.

  • Worth every rupee

The walk down to the double-decker root bridge, which our captain paced so we stopped where we wanted rather than where the schedule said. The whole thing was organised without ever feeling packaged, and we were never once left wondering what happened next.

  • Exactly what we'd hoped for

The drive out to Dawki, where we were on the water by eight and had it almost to ourselves. The whole thing was organised without ever feeling packaged, and we were never once left wondering what happened next.

  • Go before everyone finds it

  • Would book again

Getting to the living root bridge before anybody else was on the path. Not perfect — the hotel on the first night was a clear step below the rest of the trip — but it didn't take much away from the rest.
